I am currently playing a non-singing role in a musical. (I initially auditioned for two of the leads, didn't get cast, but then was asked to step in for another role with 3 weeks until opening.) Anyway, my character is supposed to yell "QUIET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" My yell isn't that piercing, so I screamed it a couple of times in rehearsal. Well, after last Wednesday night's dress rehearsal, I really did a number on my voice screaming, even though I was being extra careful. After chugging water and sucking on a cough drop to make it through the rest of the show, I decided that I needed to change my tactic. So, at Thursday's final dress rehearsal, I sang it. I hit the highest note that I could, as loud as I could. PERFECTION! No throat problems. And it was louder and more piercing than my scream!
So what have we learned from this? When in doubt...sing it!
